Comment Suppers

A magazine at its heart is an aspirational community. But so often we read something, put it down, and move on. What if we could linger a little longer in the company of others whose distinct lens on the mosaic could enrich our own? Why not try to sew the threads of this issue into the warp and woof of your local neighborhood?

In the context of COVID-19, Comment Suppers are not so easy. But we’d still like to encourage you to gather 6-10 people around a Zoom call or a wide circle.

Several discussion prompts are suggested below—and you’ll also find them on a bookmark in the pages of the print magazine. When the evening’s over, use this bookmark in whatever book you’re reading and let the memory of the discussion enrich the words. To deeper connection, reflection, and revelation . . . even in these strange times.

Bon appetit!

Summer 2021: Embodiment

Discussion Questions

  1. What has this past year’s forceful boundary-drawing clarified around your sense of the good and the beautiful? Is there a post-pandemic commitment you’ve made as a result?
  2. Do you think any sphere of our earthly life will ever successfully escape our bodily needs and glories? If so, which sphere(s)? If not, why not?
  3. There’s a lot of talk today around the body being “a social construction.” In what ways does this strike you as true? In what ways is it untrue?
  4. How do your daily habits with digital technology encourage you to forget your body? What causes you to be reminded of it?
  5. What sounds draw or awaken you to particular memories or emotions?
